Today, 13:00 By Nyle Smith Old foes Manchester United get their pre-season underway against old foes and newly promoted Premier League side Leeds. The Red Devils are hoping to put their worst-ever season behind them and start fresh as we tick towards the Prem opening day. Ruben Amorim 's side finished 15th in the 2024/25 campaign and blew their chances of Champions League qualification by losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final. However, the magnitude of the club still towers above many, hence why United have still been able to recruit the likes of ex-Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha. And the £62.5million man's first task at hand is to break down a Leeds side who immediately bounced back up to top-flight football after being relegated in the 2023/24 season. Daniel Farke's men pipped Burnley to the Championship title on goal difference as both sides finished on a staggering 100 points.

Man United face goalkeeper dilemma after Andre Onana suffers injury in training

Andre Onana could miss the start of Manchester United 's pre-season programme after suffering a hamstring injury in training. United are continuing to assess the goalkeeper but the initial signs are that he has responded well to treatment. The plan remains for Onana to travel to the United States with the rest of Ruben Amorim's squad ahead of the Premier League Summer Series against West Ham, Everton and Bournemouth. Though it remains to be seen if he will be fit enough to play in those matches. United's first pre-season game is against Leeds in Stockholm on 19 July, while they also host Fiorentina at Old Trafford on 9 August. They begin their top-flight season against Arsenal on 17 August and Onana has only missed four of United's 76 league games since his £42m move from Internazionale in 2023. Amorim's other senior goalkeepers are Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton, who signed a new, one-year contract in June. It remains to be seen if United will enter the market for a new goalkeeper, despite Onana's disappointing form since joining the club from Inter Milan. The 29-year-old has three more years on his contract, with the club possessing the option to extend the deal for a further 12 months. United remain keen on Bryan Mbeumo, but have so far fell short of Brentford's valuation of the forward, with Amorim desperate to bolster his squad after a nightmare debut campaign.

Andre Onana set to miss Manchester United's pre-season with hamstring injury

Andre Onana is set to miss Manchester United's pre-season tour with a hamstring injury. The Cameroonian goalkeeper will now work towards returning to fitness for United's Premier League season-opener against Arsenal at Old Trafford on August 17, with hamstring injuries typically taking upwards of a month from which to recover. Advertisement Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton are the other senior goalkeepers in Ruben Amorim's first-team squad, while there remains a prospect of United signing another goalkeeper this summer. The Athletic have reported that Botafogo goalkeeper John, 29, on a list of potential targets at Old Trafford. The addition of another goalkeeper could potentially push current second-choice Bayindir closer to an exit, although that prospect may be impacted by Onana's injury. Radek Vitek, 21, has returned to Old Trafford this summer following the conclusion of a loan spell at Austrian club BW Linz. Onana has started 72 of United's 76 Premier League matches across the past two seasons since joining from Inter in 2023, but all four of his absences came in the closing seven matchdays of 2024-25 with Bayindir selected in his place. United commence their pre-season against Leeds United in Sweden on July 19 before playing West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier League's Summer Series event in the United States at the end of July. Amorim's side will play a home friendly against Fiorentina on August 9, a week ahead of the new campaign. Despite an inconsistent two years at Old Trafford, Onana was set to be United's first-choice goalkeeper once again when the coming season started, following a meeting between his representatives and the club last month. A hamstring injury to make him a doubt for the Premier League opener against Arsenal is a blow then, even though United are well stocked in the goalkeeper department. Altay Bayindir is second-choice, ahead of veteran Tom Heaton and youngsters Radek Vitek and Elyh Harrison. But Bayindir fell short of fully convincing when deputising for Onana in his 10 appearances last season, and Old Trafford officials have been monitoring the goalkeeper market this summer. Advertisement Botafogo's John is on a list of potential targets, while there has been contact with the camp of Aston Villa's No 1 Emiliano Martinez. Other positions — and specifically the pursuit of Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo — have been of a higher priority, and sales are likely needed before any further signings can be made anyway, but Onana's injury could make the arrival of a new goalkeeper more urgent than previously expected. By Mark Critchley Keeping out shots is perhaps where John has quietly made his strongest case as a high-level performer. Expected goals on target (xGOT) is a metric that quantifies the quality of on-target shots, and it can be used to create a statistical picture of a goalkeeper's shot-stopping. In 2024, John recorded an xGOT differential of 8.0 — meaning he prevented eight more goals than the average goalkeeper would be expected to from the shots they faced. For context, the best in Brazil that year was Fluminense veteran Fabio, who posted a league-leading 14.4. This year, John has already 'prevented' 3.3 goals after just 11 matches. For comparison, the Premier League's top performer last season in this category was Ederson at 5.0. A major contributor to this success is his economy of movement. His pre-shot positioning is composed and grounded, allowing him to stay balanced and set before reacting. This gives him an ideal platform to explode toward the ball with control. Onana, for example, tends to make more exaggerated adjustments before shots — a style that has its benefits but can occasionally lead to mistimed reactions or suboptimal set positions. In terms of style and physical profile, John shares some similarities with Chelsea's Robert Sanchez. Both are tall, athletic goalkeepers who rely on structure and presence. But where Sanchez has occasionally struggled with timing and positioning, John's footwork in particular has been noticeably cleaner, leading to more consistent movements over the past two seasons. By Matt Pyzdrowski Advertisement United have been in touch with Emiliano Martinez's representatives since the start of the year, but before Onana's injury Villa were yet to receive any direct contact. Onana better fits teams who build possession from the back, whereas Martinez is more traditional in style and his shot-stopping engenders confidence. His command of the six-yard box is exemplary. Since his first season in the Premier League with Villa in 2020-21, he has claimed more crosses than any other goalkeeper (237). Alongside Arsenal's David Raya, he is among the best in the league when claiming high balls. There's also the psychological aspect. Martinez's performances for Argentina during their Copa America and World Cup triumphs were not just defined by big saves, but by his ability to own the moment. He has become notorious for his approach to penalty shootouts and has won multiple individual awards, including the last two Yashin Trophies for the world's best goalkeeper. However, as many Villa fans will attest, there is a difference between Martinez for his national team and Martinez in the Premier League. Rival fans may joke that he saves his more pronounced errors for non-televised matches, but the most recent season saw noticeable slip-ups at crucial moments. Villa failed to secure Champions League football after losing 2-0 against United on the final day of the season, with Martinez receiving a red card after fouling Rasmus Hojlund outside the penalty area.
